Some handy tips on what can be achieved in the garden in October in terms of growth as seen on Gardeners’ World:
Peas: For an early crop of tasty peas, sow overwintering cultivars like ‘Avola’, in a sheltered spot. Watch out for mice and consider bought or homemade cloches to provide extra protection.
Salad mixes: Salad mixes are one of easiest crops to grow. Sown in autumn, they’ll grow quickly to provide fresh pickings. If growing outside, protect them with a sturdy cloche. They’re ideal for pots and containers on the windowsill, too.
Lettuce: At this time of year, you can be making successional sowings of hardy lettuces. At this point, you want to begin sowing overwintering varieties like ‘Winter Gem’ outdoors.
Broad beans: You can boost next year’s harvest of broad beans by sowing some in October and November, in addition to winter and spring sowings.
Cauliflower: Early-summer cropping cauliflower cultivars like ‘Snowball’ can be sown now in cold frames to overwinter.
After a long day perhaps out walking what more could you ask for than to snuggle in front of the fire. With a hot drink and get ready to replenish your energy with a good night’s sleep.

Walking is one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in the United Kingdom. Within England and Wales, there is a comprehensive network of rights of way that permits access to the countryside.
The rambler’s association have curated some helpful advice and guidance to the new regulations. To help keep the activity and its members as safe as possible during the pandemic. Please find below useful advice for those who enjoy a countryside walk.
Status across the nation
England: Ramblers organised group walks can continue with up to 30 people. In accordance with UK government guidance which states organised outdoor physical activity is exempt from the ‘rule of six’. You may also walk outdoors with friends or family in a group of up to six. The three-tier system introduced on 12 October means walkers should not travel to or from very-high alert areas in England. From 6pm on Friday 23 October until further notice, walkers in England must not travel to Wales. All Ramblers group walks in Wales are cancelled from 23 October to 9 November.
Scotland: You may walk outdoors with friends or family in a group of up to six people from two households. Ramblers groups can continue to run Covid-secure group walks. In accordance with Scottish Government and sport Scotland guidance. Which allows organised outdoor non-contact sporting activities for up to 30 people. Although many walk leaders will set lower limits. However, due to temporary measures until at least 2 November. Walkers in affected health board areas should not leave their areas. Or use public transport or shared private hire vehicles, including coaches. People living elsewhere should not travel to any of the affected areas.
Wales: Ramblers organised group walks, and other Ramblers group activities, are cancelled from 6pm on the 23 October to 9 November, in accordance with Welsh government guidelines. You may walk outdoors with other members or your household (or bubble if you live alone), but you must follow the legally enforceable travel restrictions that are in place. Walkers must not travel outside their local area.
All walkers should make themselves aware of, and comply with, additional local restrictions that may affect walking locally.
We hope you can continue to safely enjoy the great British countryside this autumn.
James Meade have a great selection of Tattersall shirts, along with gilets and fleeces to ensure the unpredictable British weather does not spoil your enjoyment of outdoor pursuits.
The Tattersall Shirt
If you enjoy outdoor pursuits it’s wise to prepare your wardrobe for the drop on temperature with essentials and even thermal under garments.
The question then remains what to wear over the thermals to ensure you retain the heat? The tattersall shirt lends itself to versatility, it’s capable of seeing you through your activity whilst also remaining stylish for lunch out after your activity.
Combining a blend of Wool & Cotton together in the same thread to create a strong but soft fabric that will keep you warm when it’s not and cool when it’s hot. The unique natural properties of these two natural fibres work together to create an intimate blend.
A gilet is an essential staple for storing all your important items and making sure you can stay comfortable and warm as you go about your day. Our gilets make the perfect alternative to a full jacket or coat. They look great, and when paired with our other clothing and look perfect for the country gent.
The Classic Fleece
Fleece Zip Front Jacket 7F6 – Our fleece Jacket offers a zip front which allows for easier opening in colder weather where fingers and thumbs do not comply. In addition, the fleece also has front zip pockets adding that extra security for keys and other valuables to be kept safe. Being 100% polyester, this fleece is perfect for cold weather conditions. Polyester does not wick the moisture and perspiration. The tight weave of the fabric also keeps the heat trapped inside. Therefore, it will keep you warmer. Also suitable for adding as the top layer over your tattersall shirt and gilet.
We know James Meade love ladies blouses whether they be patterned blouses or plain. It’s always a good idea to protect your clothing when cooking so we would like to suggest using the beautiful Portmeirion apron for this purpose.
It’s that time of year when we need to take stock. The weather is ever unpredictable, and leaves begin to fall. Collecting the berries, apples and other summer leftover fruits, ready for new bloom next year.
We have found a fabulous and quick recipe for chutney by the BBC that we’d like to share with you.
The complete preparation time is less than 30 minutes, and this makes approximately 7 to 8 jars of chutney.
1kg/2lb 4oz Bramley apples
500g/1lb 2oz onions
2 garlic cloves
5cm/2in piece fresh root ginger
100g/3.5oz sultanas (or other dried fruit such as dates and raisins)
pinch of dried chilli flakes
500ml/18fl oz distilled malt vinegar
250g/9oz light muscovado sugar
1.5 tsp salt
Peel, core, then roughly chop the apples. Roughly chop the onions, finely chop the garlic and peel and finely chop the ginger.
Place the apple, onion, garlic, chilli flakes and fruit into a large, wide saucepan. Stir in the vinegar, sugar and salt. Stir the mixture over a medium heat until all the sugar is dissolved.
Once the sugar has dissolved, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat slightly and simmer the chutney for around one hour, stirring every so often. As it thickens, stir more frequently and watch that the sugar does not begin to stick to the bottom of the pan. The chutney is done when you can scrape a wooden spoon across the bottom of the pan and the chutney does not flow back into the gap.
Meanwhile, to clean the jam jars, preheat the oven to 140C/275F/Gas 1. Wash the jars well in warm soapy water then rinse thoroughly under running water. Leave the jars and lids to dry, upside down, in the oven. (Or you can clean the jars by putting them through a hot cycle of a dishwasher.)
Carefully spoon the chutney into the sterilised jars and seal while hot. Store in a cool, dark place for about a month before eating, to let the flavours mellow.
To complement your delicious chutney, why not serve in our pretty Portmeirion jar that includes a wooden utensil for serving. Complete your Portmeirion theme with the equally pretty Portmeirion Botanical gardens printed motifs apron, tea towels, oven glove and napkins.
All that’s left is to enjoy your freshly made, delicious chutney!
Wool is simply an incredible material. Used to make almost anything you can think of, from compost to cardigans, and more. In celebration of Wool Week, James Meade is looking at some of our best-selling garments made using this versatile material. To include favourites such as the merino longline cardigan, ladies knitted waistcoats and lambswool sweaters. And to tackle to great Wool Week debate “Lambswool Vs Merino Wool”!
Lambswool Versus Merino Wool
Lambswool is taken from the first shearing of a sheep. The fibres are usually no longer than 50mm. Processing is straightforward as the fibres are very fine and very soft.
Lambswool can come from any breed of sheep. The wool is not exclusive to just one breed. The lambswool heralds its popularity via its pure softness from the first lamb shear, usually about 7 months old so the fibres are undoubtedly gloriously soft. Once the lamb is shorn its wool is not used again for this category. This exclusivity of the accumulation of these supersoft and super warm fibres accounts for the demand.
Merino Wool, however, is unique to the Merino sheep, who can produce the wool repeatedly throughout their lives.
Although the rarity of gathering this wool is not as exclusive as Lambswool, the location of the fibres is only collected from one breed only and therefore quality is always assured.
Merino wool averages around 21.5 microns although the superfine follicles can measure between 15-18.5 microns making it as soft as cashmere. Making Merino wool incredibly versatile and very little of the fleece goes to waste. It works super well for next to skin base layer garments.
Lambswool is more of a soft knot and has more outwear uses.
So, there you have it, while both types of wool are soft, they are soft in a different way and the properties of the wools make them slightly better at different things. Either way at James Meade, you can always be rest assured of the quality in all our garments. Made to wear and love time and time again.
