When were pyjamas invented?
Dating back to the 13th century Ottoman Empire, the word pyjama isn’t Western at all. It originates from the Hindi word “pae jama” or “pai jama”, which essentially translates to “garment for the legs”. They were traditionally loose, lightweight trousers with a simple cord tie waist, and worn by both genders throughout South Asia and the Middle East.
Men’s nightwear took the form of long nightgowns or bed shirts from as early as the 17th century, generally seen in rich or noble households. It wasn't until the 1800s that people of all classes began to wear night shirts, typically worn as nightwear in addition to undergarments beneath everyday outerwear as a way to keep warm.
Following the Imperial influence in the West, the two-piece pyjama set we know of today then became popular in Britain by the late 1800s, and was soon adopted as sleepwear instead of the traditional night shirt.
