10 Ways to Keep Warm Inside and Out this Winter

The Great British weather is anything but predictable, but one thing’s for sure, winter is officially upon us, which means months of…coats, scarves, gloves, hats and…layers! It’s time to relish all the good things that the cold weather brings from frosty sunrises to warming fires and a change of wardrobe.

As the temperatures drop, our heating goes up and our outdoor pursuits get colder. That’s why dressing in several thinner layers works better than one thick layer of clothing…and the more layers the better. Merino wool, Pure Lambswool, Pure Cotton or fleecy fabrics are the warmest. So, whether it’s tending to your garden, walking the dog, playing a round of golf, shooting or fishing, make sure you have plenty of layers.

Our menswear expert here at James Meade lists 10 ways you can keep warm inside and out this winter.

1. Thermal and Cotton Underwear

Thermal Underwear

When layering, it’s important to remember that your bottom layer needs to be moisture-wicking. Our thermal and cotton underwear range includes a long-sleeve and short-sleeve T-shirt and Y-front Long Johns. They provide the perfect base layer for cold weather. Soft, cotton-blended fabric traps in heat, while the brushed fleece interior provides cosy warmth and insulation.

2. Thermal Trousers

Men's Thermal Trousers

Thermal trousers are the ultimate addition to your wardrobe during the colder months. They offer a comfortable fit and the flexibility required from any pair of trousers.  This classic style, with soft brushed inner, will enable you to enjoy that little bit of added warmth. Also features the addition of a concealed stretch waistband.

3. Shetland Wool

Men's Shetland Wool Knitwear

As winter's chill begins to settle in, there's nothing quite like the cozy embrace of Shetland wool knitwear to ward off the cold. Our exquisite range boasts an array of jumpers and cardigans that are not only functional but also effortlessly stylish. Crafted from the finest Shetland wool, each piece is a testament to the artistry and tradition of these remote Scottish isles. Wrap yourself in the luxurious embrace of Shetland wool and let the season's icy bite be but a distant memory.

4. The Tattersall Check Shirt

The bestselling versatile Tattersall country checked shirt is flattering in all shapes and sizes. Pair with jeans for a traditional and casual look or for a smarter style, wear them with moleskin or jumbo corduroy trousers and a tie. Crafted from the original warm handle blend of 80% cotton / 20% wool, which offers extra warmth and comfort on cold days.

5. Heavyweight Corduroy Trousers

A gentleman will always look great wearing classic corduroy trousers. Bold colours, a soft, durable finish and rugged warmth make corduroy the perfect fabric for autumn and winter wear. In addition to the extra warmth, the thickness and parallel lines of corduroy provide a kind of order and support. It’s a sophisticated, luxurious and functional fabric, holding its shape and easy to care for. Also perfect for the colder months are needlecord trousers, pure wool cavalry twill trousers and moleskin trousers.

6. Men's Knitwear

Men's Knitwear

Innately masculine and entirely versatile, quality knitwear will last a lifetime if properly looked after. From sweaters and cardigans to slipovers and zippers, thick cable-knit and cashmere, to warming Merino, Shetland and Lambswool, you are truly spoilt for choice! Choose something laidback and casual like the Fisherman’s Rib Sweater or sophisticated and smart like the cashmere or merino crew necks. We’ve got you covered, whatever your style.

7. Hats, Scarves and Gloves

Remember the days of “sleeping caps”? They make sense! Wear a cap or hat to keep your head warm. Harris Tweed looks smart in any weather, however, in the colder months, their hats and caps serve to keep your head warm. Superbly tailored and the ideal way to complete a gentleman’s outfit. It also makes sense to cover your face with a scarf when facing the winter elements. Our pure lambswool scarves are perfect for those colder days. And don’t forget gloves; men’s pure lambskin gloves will protect you from the cold but for a more stylish look, choose a wool mix leather glove.

8. Jackets and Coats

Every gentleman needs a good winter coat. It needs to be comfortable, it needs to be practical and it needs to be flattering. Whether you’re taking the dog for a walk in the country, enjoying a city break or visiting the theatre, choose a coat that is classic and versatile.  The fully lined Harvey waterproof and windproof jacket will have you prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws at you this winter.

9. Keep Your Feet Warm

When indoors, wear warm socks and slippers to keep feet cosy. Highly recommended are the house slippers; the rubber sole really makes a difference. For outdoors, it really helps to insert foam liners in your boots or shoes to give your toes an extra layer of insulation against the cold earth. We have a variety of timeless designs from leading manufacturers such as Easy B, Gir Sport and Padders.

10. Nightwear

Conclusion

And finally…to bed! When we change into our nightwear at the end of the day we want to continue that theme of feeling warm and comfortable. If this isn’t the case, then consider updating your nightwear. Who doesn’t love treating themselves to a new set of pure cotton pyjamas? Or if you prefer the more traditional look, a new nightshirt! Complete your wrapping up further with a soft and cosy cotton velour or fleecy dressing gown, available in a choice of patterns and colours.
